    Interview: Oct 15th, 2010

    17th Shard

What can you tell us about the Knights Radiant?

    Brandon Sanderson

Um…what can I tell you that's not in the books?

    17TH SHARD

    A little more about them.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

There were 10 orders of Knights Radiant. Each order was based on a combination of two of the "smaller" magic systems in this world, so to speak. You combine two of them together and they each had something kind of "their own". So if you look at the map in the front of the magic system and you mark circles that include one large circle and two of the smaller circles in between, you can find the 10 orders right on there. The mini circles are the powers and the big circles represent the orders and the essences and things like that. So one big circle, two little circles equals an order of Knights Radiant.

    Interview: Mar 17th, 2012

    Question

A question related to that. There’s an idea going around that all the spren that can Nahel Bond, all Knight Radiant spren are called honorspren, and then Nohadon talks specifically about honorspren. Is that the case? You know, is it just the Windrunner spren, or is it all the spren?

    Brandon Sanderson

I’m going to deal with this in the next book. So I’ll just go ahead and let it be a literal RAFO. It is coming.

(interruption, leading Brandon to lose his train of thought)

So what we are dealing with here is that all Spren are indeed all pieces of the one who has gone, so those spren are all- except the Windrunner spren, the spren like Syl, have certain umm.

    ZAS

Nohadon mentioned that "All the spren aren’t as discerning as honorspren."

    BRANDON SANDERSON

So there has been dissension among them about who gets to call themselves honorspren, if that makes sense, and there is some disagreement among scholars about which ones are really, you know "This is what defines an honorspren".

But the spren you are running into are all (something) of either Honor or Cultivation, or some mixture between them. And you can usually tell the ones that are more Honor, and the ones that are more Cultivation. That should be able to be (something).

    Interview: Mar 24th, 2014

    Question

Could any type of spren bond with a person (even if the results wouldn't be a Knight Radiant)? Or only the ones associated with a branch of the Knights?

    Brandon Sanderson

Ooh, that's an excellent question. This is something theoretically possible for a lesser spren to achieve.

    Interview: Mar 11th, 2014

    Question

How about the other way around? Can a Parshendi bond a KR spren?

    Brandon Sanderson

Historically, the Parshendi were not made Knights Radiant, or the parshmen weren't.

    Question

    Can they become squires maybe?

    Brandon Sanderson

Historically they did not, but it's not impossible.

    Interview: Aug 9th, 2014

    Jeremy

Is the order of the Ideals fixed? E.g. does Kaladin have to say the Windrunner Ideals in a specific order, or are they situation-specific?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

Yes, the sequence is fixed. The oaths for each order are essentially a progression of understanding of the kind of person that each Order of Knights Radiant is trying to produce. The specific wording of each Ideal is not fixed, but the overall idea of each Ideal, and the order in which they are spoken, is.

    Interview: Aug 9th, 2014

    Jeremy

There are hints in Words of Radiance that the Thrill is tied to an individual entity that Taravangian has studied, possibly one of the Unmade. Does this have anything to do with the hints of why the Knights Radiant turned away? Were the Unmade some of those who did whatever-it-was that tore them apart?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

[This is the one where he stopped me partway through asking, probably due to the wording]. Does it have anything to do with it? Yes. Is it the root cause or the primary reason? I'm not going to reveal that right now.

    Question

That spren that are in the Everstorm - will there be more of those and will they pair directly...

    Brandon Sanderson

There are more of them. There is not an exact one-to-one correlation?

    Question

I assume there will be ten opposite orders to the Knights Radiant?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Interview: Mar 8th, 2014

    Jerich ()

Is it possible then to reawaken a shard blade if that blade is wielded by someone who speaks the oaths of a Knights Radiant?

    Brandon Sanderson ()

(Thinking)...Yes, but it would be extremely difficult. The spren in a shardblade are not trapped in a state of mid-transformation like the Elantrians. They are stuck in an agony cycle after having a significant portion of their consciousnesses ripped out of them. The Nahel bond is what allows Spren to think on material plane and that has been torn away. It would be like having a data jack installed and then having someone come up to your head and rip it out of your head.

    Interview: Mar 8th, 2014

    Jerich ()

Are there radiant orders that would take someone like Adolin even after what he does at the end of Words of Radiant?

    Brandon Sanderson ()

Brandon: I am not going to say whether or not Adolin will become a Knights Radiant, but yes, there are several orders that would be very happy with what he did. Me: Like the Skybreakers or Dustbringers? Brandon: The Skybreakers would probably not want him because he broke a law, but there are other orders that would think he completely did the right thing and be very happy with him. Trickonometry (who was waiting in line behind me): Like the Dustbringers? Brandon: (Didn't say anything but looked up at him, smiled and half nodded)

    Footnote

This question refers to Adolin's slaying of Sadeas.

Any hints on the chapter 84 code?

    Brandon Sanderson

There is a key in the book.

    Wetlander

In addition to the two abilities given by each surge, does a Knight Radiant order have a third blended ability, the interaction of its two given surges?

    Brandon Sanderson

Not specifically as phrased there, but each order has quirks that are unique to it. They are magical quirks, but it's not necessarily a blend of the powers.

    Wetlander

So Shallan's Memories is kind of a...

    Brandon Sanderson

Is associated with her Order, yes.

    Wetlander

It's not just because she had that wonderful ability, and Pattern came along and went, "Oh, I like this one!"

No that is not necessarily what attracted Pattern.

    EHyde

And, how were the Radiants able to summon their Shardblades at the Recreance if they'd already decided to break their oaths?

    EHyde

I had a couple other questions about the Recreance that you're probably not going to answer. I was wondering if the Radiants were deliberately trying to put Shardblades in the hands of non-Radiants, since they left them all outside a military base.

    Brandon Sanderson

RAFO. Since I've answered so many questions, the RAFOs are going to start flying freely. I'm like, "Now, what is there left to write books about?

Are the rest of the books in the Stormlight Archive going to be different colors?

    Brandon Sanderson

They are, and you can actually match the color to the order of the Knights Radiant. That's the Windrunners[WoK], that's the symbol of the Windrunners, that's the color. That's the Lightweavers[WoR], and that's the symbol of the Lightweavers, which is the same, and the color.

    KiManiak

This may be RAFO bait, but let’s see. Did the Knights Radiant in Dalinar’s Feverstone Keep vision divest their discard their Shards to a specific person/being/entity? (Brandon interrupted here before I could finish, but I’ll include the rest anyway). If so, have we seen them onscreen as of the end of WoR?

Cool. I’m not going to bother asking who did right now. With Syl being able to be revived, is Adolin ever going to be able to revive his own blade, or-

    Brandon Sanderson

Ah, that would be very difficult, as the orig-, in most cases, the original person who broke the oaths has to be the one.

    Question

Ok. Do you have to have done the third oath before you can convert your spren into a Blade?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Uh, in most orders, yes.

    Question

Do the Knights Radiant have a nahn? Are they within the nahn system or the dahn system at all?

    Brandon Sanderson

The nahn and dahn system is a more recent construct. They would be at the very height of it, I would say.

    Question

Okay. So the system hasn't been reorganized yet with Kaladin and such?

    Brandon Sanderson

You'll have to watch and see what happens in the next few books. Because the culture is not used to Knights Radiant being around.

    Interview: Feb 25th, 2016

    Question

What is the thing with Adolin's serial dating? Is it just...?

    Brandon Sanderson

He is bad with relationships, and that's just it. He's a little bit scared of being good at relationships, and so there's some kind of unconscious sabotaging going on. But yeah, he's young and he's bad at relationships.

    Question

Do the Radiants have only one gender per [order], or you can have...?

    Brandon Sanderson

You have - yeah. There can be different genders.

    Question

Why is Dalinar very restrictive of Adolin but not with Renarin and Elhokar?

    Brandon Sanderson

It is a little bit - I would say a slight flaw on Dalinar's part, he's too hard on Adolin. But that's because Adolin is in line for the throne, and he's the eldest son, and the heir, and all of that stuff. I would say that Dalinar's a little too lax in some ways, a little too strict in others.

    Blightsong

Is it possible for a Knight Radiant to become a kind of Drab if they use too much investiture?

    Interview: Apr 8th, 2016

    Blightsong

Were the oaths of the Knights radiant consciously chosen, or did they happen naturally.

    Brandon Sanderson

*apprehension*. This is one of those vague ones in that yes and no. They are a natural outgrowth of the spren, but the spren are a natural outgrowth of human's perception of natural forces, but the spren are sentient, so I would say it's a little more by instinct than not. For example to Knights Radiant in the same order might speak the words differently, but the concept is the same. You will see this happen in a future book, where a Windrunner will speak the oaths. It's a slightly different take on the same concept. Some are moreso, like Shallan's oaths are very individualized truths, so.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Blightsong

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, investiture disrupts investiture. It's harder for her to even soulcast a regular person than, say, a rock.

    Blightsong

    Is a Mistborn invested?

    Brandon Sanderson

The Mistborn, how their burning the metal, you're right. They are not specifically invested when they are not burning. When the investiture becomes active, the yes. Before, no, you're right on that.

There are no good and evil shards in my opinion, like and so, what evil and what's not evil can totally have spren of honor that you would consider evil. Question

KR seemed to have opposite gender spren. Why is Glys male then ? Is there something hidden there ?

    Brandon Sanderson

More naturally, the spren is opposite gender but it doesn't have to be. It's not a indication necessarily of homosexuality, but sometimes it is, sometimes it's not. More often, you'll attract spren of the opposite gender, but spren genders are very fluid anyway. You're not supposed to read anything specific into that.
